Interfaith Learning Opportunity | Attending a Passover Shabbat Service

By Jill Feil, Westminster Colorado Stake

On Friday, April 3, 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade Sunday School students, along with leaders from the McKay Lake Ward of the Westminster Colorado Stake, participated in an interfaith visit to Temple Emanuel Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Denver and the state of Colorado. Founded in 1874, Temple Emanuel has maintained an active congregation for more than 150 years.

The youth attended a Passover Shabbat service and the Oneg social held prior to the service, where they enjoyed fellowship and learned more about Jewish traditions and community life.

In preparation for the visit, students participated in a Sunday School lesson focused on teachings found in the Old Testament and the Torah. They studied the account of the children of Israel being led out of Egypt by the prophet Moses, including the plagues, the miracles associated with their deliverance, the parting of the Red Sea, and the origins of Passover. Students also discussed the historical and religious context of these events and their significance across faith traditions, including their connection to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

During their visit, students were uplifted by the music offered by Senior Cantorial Soloist Steve Brodsky and appreciated the sermons and prayers led by Rabbis Emily Hyatt and Elizabeth Sacks. The experience provided an opportunity to observe and learn from Jewish worship practices while fostering mutual respect and understanding.

While at the synagogue, the group toured a chapel space, viewed Torahs used for study, and enjoyed traditional kosher foods, including matzo crackers, salmon, chicken, cookies, and water. They also met members of the congregation, who extended a warm and welcoming spirit throughout the evening. The main service was held in the larger sanctuary, where beautiful stained-glass windows contributed to a warm and reverent atmosphere.

The McKay Lake Ward which is located in Broomfield expresses gratitude to Jenny Williams at Temple Emanuel for her coordination and hospitality in making this opportunity possible. The visit supported students in their study of the Old Testament and provided a meaningful setting for building interfaith connections within the community.
