Colorado Teen Creates High School Just Serve Club

In the fall of 2018 one high school teen had an idea to spread the light of Christ to more people by creating a “Just Serve” club at her high school, Discover Canyon Campus.

Abbie Adams sought out the necessary signature from a principal and obtained a teacher sponsor. Then she set up a booth during their school club sign-up fair.  Sixty students signed up to participate.

This club fills an important niche in the school because there are many clubs and some classes that require the students to do service such as National Honor Society, Spanish club, ROTC as well as Civic classes there in Colorado Springs.

It also provides an opportunity for students not participating in other clubs to complete service hours for college applications and other various reasons without any requirements such as grades or expense.

The JustServe.org Club is offering one activity per month. Most activities will be held during lunchtime in the school library. Abbie sends out meeting notifications and reminders to all participants through the app Remind.

While the meeting is centered on completing service, she informs them about other upcoming service opportunities available on JustServe.org that she thinks they might be interested in. For example, in October the  Junior Diabetes Research Foundation hosted a race that needed assistance setting up, marshaling and cleaning up after the race.

The first JustServe.org Club activity of the year was addressing cards for Angel’s of America’s Fallen. It is an organization that provides an after-school activity for children whose parent has died during military service or as a first responder. They send out birthday cards and congratulation notes for advancing in their activity to each of their participants and surviving parent. Abbie’s club had a great turnout. They addressed 200 cards to be mailed and had to turn students away.

In their second meeting they mae table favors for Springs Rescue Mission, a local soup kitchen in Colorado Springs. It involves writing an encouraging note on a 3″x 5″ note card with a small candy attached for those coming into to eat. It is a fantastic activity for large groups.

After students have registered on the JustServe.org website and completed six hours of service, they earn a JustServe t-shirt.

I think this is amazing and these kids are also amazing. What a great example to other kids in their school. I make handmade cards and would like to donate some to your group. I also have a few friends in my group who I think would also donate cards. How would we go about doing that? I can be reached here or by phone at [ommitted for privacy]
Thank you for all that you are doing to make this world a better place to live.

Hi! I am a fellow high school student and would like to start my own Just Serve Club! I think it’s a great idea and a simple way to get involved in the community. I have a few questions though. Do you host service projects in specific locations on weekends as well as at school? For example, having a club project at a local park on a Saturday? Also, did you reach out to the Just Serve Administration at all? Thanks!
