Boulder Stake Serves Meals, Makes Blankets for SERVE Weekend
By Becca Bracey, Boulder Stake Media Specialist
On Saturday, September 28, members of the Boulder Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined with a group of churches in Broomfield for a day of service to the Broomfield community. This is an annual event called SERVE Weekend and was the first time our stake has participated.
We all met up at Broomfield United Methodist Church for a welcome and send-off, and then volunteers split up to serve 10 different organizations through 11 projects:
- “Open Space Projects” benefiting the City and County of Broomfield
- “Home Care and Yard Love” benefiting the City and County of Broomfield
- A Precious Child
- Keystone Assisted Living
- Broomfield FISH
- Global Hope Letter Writing
- Hope House
- Habitat for Humanity, their ReStore operations
- Refuge
- Joyful Journeys
- Cooking and Meal Prep for Meals on Wheels
Mary Catherine York, our Boulder Stake Interfaith Specialist, made all of this happen – with strong support from Parker Ericson, our JustServe Specialist. They joined a leadership of people from the other churches to do all of the planning.
Ericson led the send-off which involved having all the volunteers gather around the circular drive while he welcomed them and gave instructions. He did a beautiful job with this, tying in his history growing up in Broomfield. He gave an uplifting message about losing ourselves in service to others and showed appreciation for all the people who signed up to volunteer.
Ericson also had the leadership team introduce themselves which included Becky from Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, myself (Becca Bracey), Mark Smith from the City and County of Broomfield, Ericson, Mary Beth from the United Church of Christ Broomfield, and Nathan Heimer of Broomfield United Methodist Church.
The Boulder Stake hosted a blanket making project that benefitted A Precious Child at our ward building in Broomfield. Members of our stake joined members of other churches in making a total of 37 blankets and then donating them to A Precious Child. During the project, participants remarked, “It was a gentle and sweet service opportunity” and “What a delightful group of ladies to share the morning with.”
Ericson also led the project to make and serve brunch to unhoused people in the Broomfield community. For this project, a total of 190 people served the brunch with almost a third coming from the Boulder Stake.
SERVE Weekend will happen again in September 2025 so make sure to check out the JustServe website if you would like to participate!
