Aurora Family Helps Venezuelan Family Make Colorado Their New Home
By Sage Anderson, Aurora South Stake Media Specialist & Corey Christiansen, Denver Region Media Specialist
A family in the Aurora South Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has spent more than a year helping some new arrivals from Venezuela find their footing in the Mile High City.
Caitlin and Jeffery Mulcock started working with the Rivero family around Thanksgiving 2023. Their efforts to provide food, clothing and shelter for the immigrant family were featured in a story by CBS Colorado.
Now, the Riveros are still in the apartment that the Mulcocks helped find for them. They’ve been able to stay with a little financial help from the Mulcocks for rent. The two Rivero children are doing well in school and the family has been able to attend a local Spanish-speaking ward. Albie Rivero, the daughter of the family, recently gave a talk in front of her school, which is amazing considering that a year ago Albie didn’t speak any English.
Caitlin and her family said they feel that helping those who need it is an opportunity to strengthen the community around them.
The Rivero family has been impacted for the rest of their lives. They took a chance at a better life by relocating themselves here. Because of the kindness of Caitlin and her family, the Riveros have reliable housing. What’s more, they have a feeling of acceptance and love from their new environment. Beyond their family’s help with the Riveros, the Mulcocks also organized a coat drive with their local church to help even more people in need in their area during these cold Colorado winters.
The Mulcocks are setting an amazing example for the Denver metro area by recognizing they had the time, energy and resources to help the Riveros. They’re showing that getting involved means helping others within the capacity of your time, energy and resources. The first step is to look beyond yourself to others in need.
This story is a message of genuine charity. The world is full of people who need love and kindness, and the world is full of people who are able to supply it. We just need to look beyond ourselves and help those whom we can.
