Parker’s Bree Robinson Starts Service Club at Ponderosa High School

Bree Robinson is a member of the Parker South Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a senior at Ponderosa High School in Parker. Last year, a leader spoke to her about starting a club at her high school, a service club. Bree thought this was a great idea so she immediately began talking to people within her school how she might go about starting her own club.

Her high school requires that every student has 20 hours of community service in order to graduate so she thought this club would be a great way to help fellow students achieve that requirement while also finding ways to serve in the community. Bree drafted a plan to present to her school, which included why she wanted to start a club and what the club would do. Bree explained in her plan that her reason for creating this club was to help people discover that service can bring joy and to encourage people to look outside of themselves in support of one another.

It wasn’t easy, but she finally received approval from the school board and named the club, “JustServe.” When the club began last year, it had only three members. This year, they have 28 members. The JustServe Club at Ponderosa High School meets twice a month.

They do all types of projects in support of the community, from writing letters to veterans turning 100 years old to visiting kids in the children’s hospital. They also visit the JustServe website to look for ideas on how to serve others around the community of Parker. Despite the difficulty in getting the club started, Bree has learned a lot and is thrilled to see the interest others have in joining.

She has also learned that service can be a lot of fun when you do it with others. She has learned that when you are having a bad day, your worries can automatically turn around when you look outside of yourself and focus on others. Bree thinks a service club could be an amazing experience for every high school to have – both for the members of the community being helped, but especially for those high school students who are choosing to serve others.
